Health Education Youth Empowerment Series

Health Education Youth Empowerment Series
SHAPE America’s Health Education Youth Empowerment Series is intended to generate opportunities for middle school students and empower them to become a positive influence for health-enhancing behaviors within themselves and others. According to the GENYOUth Report (2015), Youth Empowerment is an attitudinal, structural, and cultural process through which young people gain the ability, authority, and agency to make decisions and implement change in their own lives and the lives of others – including other youth and adults.

Each 50-minute lesson agenda includes instant activities to start the lesson, learning activities to help students become proficient in the NHES skill focused on in the unit and to acquire functional knowledge, and closure activities to conclude the lesson. Ideas for lesson assessment, differentiation, homework and incorporating technology also are included. Each lesson provides a list of necessary materials that the teacher can prepare or provide along with additional resources to further student learning. While the lessons are written to be appropriate for a variety of settings, we encourage you to review each lesson before implementing it and adjust it to fit the needs of your students and available class time.
