Course Content Overview

 
SHAPE America's National Standards & Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education define what a student should know and be able to do as result of a highly effective physical education program. This course will outline the 5 national standards and associated grade level outcomes while providing multiple SHAPE America resources that will bolster your understanding of the standards and outcomes and boost your ability to utilize the national standards in your physical education classes;

 Upon completing this course, participants will be able to:
 
  • Identify the relationship of the 5 national standards to physical literacy;
  • Define the 5 SHAPE America national standards for K-12 physical education;
  • Explain the importance of each national standard using layman’s terms in order to communicate with parents, administrators, and fellow teachers;
  • Discuss the relationship of the national standards to their state standards;
  • Match grade-level outcomes to the appropriate national standard;
  • Interpret and apply the scope and sequence chart.

Curriculum mapping classifies core skills, content and scheduling taking into consideration the specifics of your Physical Education program and student population. This course will illustrate the process of curriculum mapping within the grade level (horizontal mapping) and across the grade levels (vertical mapping) utilizing the National Standards and Grade Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education as the basis for content.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
 
  • Identify the goals and steps associated with curriculum planning;
  • Recognize the levels of Bloom’s taxonomy and the connection to physical education progressions;
  • Categorize physical education grade-level outcomes by their associated level in Bloom’s taxonomy;
  • Apply horizontal mapping (within the grade level) and vertical mapping (across grade levels) strategies;
  • Analyze specific considerations that influence the development of an individual curriculum plan and reflect on how those considerations will impact their curriculum map;
  • Design an academic year-long individualized curriculum plan based on state standards or the SHAPE America national standards and grade-level outcomes for physical education to meet the needs of a specific school climate and student population.

Assessment is the gathering of evidence about student learning and making inferences on student progress and growth based on that evidence. This course will cover the basics of formative, summative, formal, and informal assessments in Physical Education, and tools, rubrics and resources to utilize while assessing students. The course content will reinforce the use of standards based assessment and how to incorporate standards based grading in your physical education program.
 
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
 
  • Describe the value and importance of assessment and feedback in physical education;
  • Differentiate between types of assessment (formal, informal, diagnostic, formative, summative);
  • Identify a variety of appropriate assessment methods for use in physical education and discuss how they can and should be utilized;
  • Recognize appropriate modifications to utilize in assessing and grading students with disabilities;
  • Develop assessment tools aligned to the SHAPE America national standards or adapt existing assessment tools to meet their needs.

Course 5: Instructional Strategies Coming in September

A physical educator’s goal is to teach and help students to acquire knowledge and skills to become physically literate individuals. In order to fulfill this goal, physical educators must establish an environment that is conducive to teaching and learning. This course will enable you to develop routines and procedures necessary to create and manage an effective learning environment where instruction and activity are ongoing.
 
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
 
  • Develop expectations, procedures and routines to create a positive and culturally responsive learning environment and identify strategies for dealing with situations that inhibit a positive classroom;
  • Identify and select a variety of classroom management strategies to maximize time on task and student learning;
  • Create a behavior management plan that allows students to become responsible for their own behavior and learning;
  • Select modifications and accommodations to meeting the needs of all students;
  • Utilize technology as a tool for assessment, effective classroom management, to increase student engagement and activity time and to provide unique opportunities to enhance student knowledge;
  • Incorporate mindfulness and self-reflection activities to improve instructional strategies, classroom management, routines and procedures.
