Channing Mann Administrator of the Year

The Channing Mann Administrator of the Year Award honors individuals who have dedicated themselves to excellence as administrators or supervisors, in contributions to their profession, and in service to the mission of SHAPE America and school leadership. These individuals exemplify the highest standards in accomplishment and innovation, in strong and vigorous leadership and in significant scholarship within the field. Not more than one Channing Mann Award is given each year.

The recipient shall:
  • Be a current member of SHAPE America and shall have held such membership for at least three (3) years.
  • Candidates shall have served as a full-time administrator/supervisor of physical education in K-12 for a period of at least five (5) years.
Award Criteria
  • Demonstrate leadership in K-12 physical education and/or health education at the national, regional, and/or state level.
  • Demonstrate service to the profession through publications, presentations, workshops, in-services, etc.
  • Demonstrate advocacy for quality education.
  • Demonstrate significant contributions to curriculum development, technology, innovation, staff development, program improvement, or resource development in physical education and/or health education.
Channing R. Mann

A native of Lincoln, Nebraska and a graduate of Lincoln High School, Channing R. Mann pursued a career in physical education. He received his professional training at the YMCA Training school (later Springfield College), Springfield, Mass. graduating in 1916. From 1917-1919 he directed the Army YMCA program at Fort Jackson. In 1920 he became the first certified hygiene and physical training director of New York State. From 1920 until 1963 he served as Director of Health, Physical Education and Recreation in the public schools of Troy, New York. Throughout his career Mann was actively involved in various health and physical education organizations, as well as in the writing of various aspects of physical education planning.

  • Curriculum vita (CV) not to exceed 10 pages. Reviewers will not read more than 10 pages.
  • Two (2) letters of support from nominators. Letters should specifically address the criteria for the award and how the person qualifies.
  • Biographical sketch (250-300 words)
