Oregon State University Professor to be Honored with National Award

RESTON, VA, March 7, 2017 — Bradley J. Cardinal, Ph.D., professor, Kinesiology Program, College of Public Health and Human Sciences, at Oregon State University in Corvallis, will be honored with the SHAPE America Honor Award for meritorious service by SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators. The award, which recognizes recipients for their personal integrity, devoted service to the profession, and noteworthy contributions to the advancement of health and physical education, will be presented at the Professional Excellence Awards Ceremony on Thursday, March 16, during the SHAPE America National Convention& Expo in Boston.

"Brad Cardinal is a prolific researcher, an internationally recognized scholar, a caring advisor and a conscientious committee member," says SHAPE America President Jackie Lund of Georgia State University. "In all, Brad is a person who has truly devoted himself to the development of the fields of health, physical education, recreation and dance." 

A faculty member at Oregon State since 1997, Cardinal received the university's Elizabeth P. Ritchie Distinguished Professor award in 2009. Prior to his appointment at Oregon State, Brad served on the faculties of Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) and Eastern Washington University (Cheney, WA). He has also served as a Faculty Scholar-In-Residence at Hong Kong Baptist University, and, during the course of his career, collaborated with scholars from China, Finland, France, Hong Kong, Iran, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. 

He has authored/coauthored more than 300 articles, chapters, reports, or reviews; and given nearly 300 professional and scholarly presentations. Additionally, he has co-authored two books, each in multiple edition.  

Within SHAPE America he has served as President of the Research Consortium;Editorial Board Co-Chair and Editorial Board Member, Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance; and Editorial Board Chair, Editorial Board member, and Psychology Section Editor of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport. Among his many awards, honors, and recognitions, he is Fellow #475 of the National Academy of Kinesiology; a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine; a Fellow in the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport and Dance Professionals; and a Research Fellow in SHAPE America. He is a 1998 recipient of the Mabel Lee Award, the 2013 recipient of the Research Consortium's Distinguished Service Award, and he delivered the 2015 C. H. McCloy Lecture.  

Cardinal's daily commitment to living an active, healthy lifestyle has been featured in The Oregonian (January 6, 2014), SHAPE America's Momentum (Spring 2014), and through his participation in events such as "Bike for Mom" (August 16, 2015, Thailand) – a Guinness World Records setting event. 

To date he has hosted seven visiting scholars representing four different countries. His current and former advisees include 32 doctoral students (nine as committee chair/co-chair), 86 masters students (52 as chair/co-chair), and nine Honors and/or International Degree Program thesis students (seven as chair). He joined SHAPE America in 1985 and is a Life member. 

More than 4,000 health and physical education teachers, researchers and other physical activity professionals are expected to attend the convention, which is the largest event of its kind in the country. The convention, which will take place March 14-18, is held in partnership with SHAPE America Eastern District and the Massachusetts Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (MAHPERD).
