Physical Education Teacher Education programs have historically included information on motor development however information specific to sensory integration (SI) theory is not always part of this coursework. This webinar is designed to "re-introduce" SI theory and discuss/demonstrate how SI can positively impact children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. In addition, participants will see a variety of fun activities designed to promote sensory integration, cross-lateral integration, sensory stimulation and discrimination.

In addition, attendees will learn about the concept of GMAT (Gross Motor Assessment Teaming) when working on SI related activities. Webinar attendees will be asked to "engage" in a variety of sensory integration activities from their sites.

    1. Understand the function of the sensory input systems in the development of coordinated movement.
    2. Understand the role of the gross motor assessment team towards working with children who have sensory integration delays.

This webinar will review IDEA physical education requirements for students with disabilities, discuss some relevant legal decisions and federal policy clarifications related to IDEA and physical education. Several strategies for effective advocacy of school-based APE programs will also be presented.

Since the inception of the original Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1975, students with disabilities have been included into general physical education programs. We have learned a great deal about what works and what doesn't in inclusive physical education, particularly through research in the last 15 years. This presentation reviews the research on inclusion with implications for practice. We will discuss the effects of support such as teacher assistants and peer tutors, as well as the attitudes of children without disabilities, attitudes of general physical educators, and the effects of accommodations on student learning.

Every educator is an advocate. While ESSA identifies physical education as part of a well-rounded education, the erosion of genuine physical education continues due to credit flexibility options such as waivers and online classes. Every school district has had or will have discussions regarding credit flexibility alternatives to traditional PE. It's time to bust the myths. Now is the time to preemptively and proactively take the discussion in a new direction. Embracing the inevitability of credit flexibility options opens the door to collaborative discussion. Speak up to demonstrate why physical education is also high stakes education. If you don't, who will?
    Learning Objectives:
    • Participants will learn how to take a leadership approach to advocating for responsible school district policy.
    • Participants will learn how to address the rationale used to justify credit flexibility options.
    • Participants will gain insight into the decision-making process used by school policymakers when agreeing to accept credit flexibility options.

The Student Progression Model of PhysEd Instruction was developed over several years of team teaching and professional collaboration with some fantastic colleagues. It has completely changed the way I teach! The model differentiates the instruction by allowing those that have a good grasp of the skill to move on while recognizing those that need additional practice. The instruction is standards-based and focused on authentic skill development in each student. In fact, the assessments are used as motivators and allow the students to communicate to the teacher what they know and where they need assistance.
    Learning Objectives:
    • The learner will be introduced to the Student Progression Model of Instruction (SPMI).
    • The learner will explore how to develop units of instruction based on the SPMI.
