Skin Cancer Prevention Mini-Lessons, Middle School (Grades 6-8)

Skin Cancer Prevention Mini-Lessons, Middle School (Grades 6-8)
SHAPE America has partnered with Mollie’s Fund, a national non-profit at the forefront of melanoma awareness and skin cancer prevention, to create this set of standards-based mini-lessons aligned with SHAPE America’s National Health Education Standards (updated 2024). These lessons support and extend the important message of the short video, Dark Side of the Sun, providing educators with ready-to-use classroom resources that engage students in building lifelong sun safety and skin cancer prevention habits.

Throughout the lessons, students will be using the health skill of Enhancing Health Behaviors using the skill cues acronym I AM HEALTHY. Students should have prior knowledge with this skill prior to these lessons within other units of study. When learning health skills, a skill should be introduced; skill cues should be presented and learned and modeled before implementing the skill practice. These lessons focus on skill practice only within the topic of skin cancer prevention and sun safety due to their length.

Designed as short, flexible 10-20 minute instructional modules, these mini-lessons can be seamlessly integrated into existing health education units. By delivering accurate information, correcting misconceptions and fostering practical skills, these resources will equip students with the knowledge and behaviors necessary to protect their skin health throughout their lives.
